This can be a good option if you do not have a fenced-in yard; however, you must be careful to limit the amount of time your dog stays in this confined space. It is best to put kennels in a quiet and calm place of your house. Alternatively, some dog owners prefer to allow their dog to sleep beside or on their bed. Consider investing in a dog bed that your puppy can claim as its own.
Shop for the Necessities
There are quite a few canine-related supplies you will need to have on hand before your furry friend arrives. These include food, bowls, a collar, a chew toy and many others. The first few days after you get your puppy may be a little bit hectic, so it is a good idea to do this shopping ahead of time. Remember that all of these items do not have to be expensive. A knotted rope is just as good of a chew toy as the pricey ones sold at your local pet store.
Decide on a Training Plan
A less tangible step in your preparation is deciding how you will train your dog. Be sure that your family or roommates understand and agree to your plan. Think about what behaviors will be allowed, where the dog can go in the house and how you will reinforce good behaviors.
Be Patient
Even the most intelligent dog needs some time to adjust to its new surroundings. Remember to be patient. As long as you are consistent in your training, your dog will catch on to the household rules soon.
